Cultural Ministers Council - Standing Committee and working groups

Cultural Ministers Council Standing Committee

The Standing Committee is made up of officials from each of the Cultural Ministers Council member governments and the Australia Council and provides advice and administrative support to the council.

It meets at least once a year in person and may meet more often by teleconference. It exchanges views on the development and co-ordination of arts and cultural initiatives in Australia with a view to progressing work on the agenda of the Cultural Ministers Council.

The Standing Committee is the only permanent committee of the Cultural Ministers Council. All other committees and working groups are reviewed for their value and effectiveness at least once every three years.

The Standing Committee's main objective is to advise and assist the Cultural Ministers Council to improve the cooperation and coordination of government activities as they affect cultural activities.

The chair of the Standing Committee may refer matters that are not the responsibility of the Cultural Ministers Council or the Standing Committee to other appropriate bodies such as the Council of the Australian Museums Associations, meetings of the directors of government arts bodies or the Council of Australian State Libraries.

Working and Advisory Groups

At the 22 September 2006 CMC meeting, Ministers charged Standing Committee with forming new working groups to take forward the development of the arts and education, contemporary music, cultural indicators and protocols. Ministers also agreed to establish a ‘round table’ of officials to boost the contribution of the creative innovative economy.
