The Centre for Quantum Computer Technology is based at the University of New South Wales and involves research nodes from the University of Melbourne, the University of Queensland and the Los Alamos National laboratory in the United States of America.
In November 2000, the Australian Research Council Special Research Centre for Quantum Computer Technology was awarded a one-off injection of $9 million in Commonwealth funding. The Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, the Department of Defence, the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs and the Department of Industry, Science and Resources all agreed to contribute an equal share of the funds over three years; each contributing $2.25 million.
Commonwealth funding will facilitate research which aims to develop the key functional elements of a solid-state quantum computer in silicon. If successful, the outcome has the potential to revolutionise computing worldwide.
